How to Repair Cracks in Concrete Driveways

Concrete is a durable material, but it breaks down over time when exposed to natural elements. Concrete driveways are especially susceptible to tree roots, impact damage from heavy objects, vehicles and extreme weather.

Luckily for homeowners, small business owners and contractors, sealing cracks in concrete is an easy task with KOLD-FLO® crack filler®. With the right tools, supplies and repair material, you’ll maintain your concrete or asphalt driveway for years to come.

Preparation Before Patching Concrete Cracks

Resurfacing a concrete driveway might not be necessary, especially if the damage is minimal. Typically, you can repair concrete cracks smaller than ½ inch using a pourable crack filler and a few simple tools.

To get started, follow these steps:

  1. Widen small cracks and brush away damaged concrete.

Small cracks under ¼ inch require widening to allow the repair filler to penetrate the break. Use a chisel to carefully widen the cracks, then brush away debris from the area.

  1. Clean the concrete driveway.

Use a garden hose with a spray nozzle or a pressure washer to thoroughly clean your driveway. Make sure the driveway is free of dirt, debris, moss and weeds before applying crack repair filler.

  1. Fill the crack with a concrete driveway crack repair product.

A high-quality product, such as KOLD-FLO® pourable crack filler, seals concrete cracks and prevents water from further damaging and displacing the driveway’s surface.

For cracks smaller than ½ inch, apply KOLD-FLO® by pouring it carefully from the container. Smooth the crack filler level with the pavement using a V- or U-shaped squeegee.

For cracks larger than ½ inch, fill the crack with foam tubing to pack the gap. Leave a ¼-inch space and apply the crack filler. Use a trowel to press and smooth the product into the crack.

  1. Allow the concrete patch to dry.

Let the repair dry completely before opening the driveway to vehicle traffic.
